Just south of Teton County, Wyoming, lay Star Valley and the small communities of Alpine, Thayne and Afton. Once renowned for its dairy and cheese industry, the lush valley now has fewer than 40 dairies amidst acres of residential and recreational subdivisions. Alpine, near the confluence of the Snake, Salt, and Greys rivers, has blossomed into a bedroom community of Jackson with over 800 residents. Largely dependent on summer tourism and winter snowmobiling, Star Valley’s economy contrasts sharply with that of Kemmerer, the county seat some 100 miles to the south. Residents in the Kemmerer area have petitioned the legislature to separate from Lincoln County and form their own smaller county with less tourism and more reliable oil and gas revenues. Last fall the Star Valley Chamber of Commerce sponsored two presentations on the Yellowstone Business Partnership that attracted large business audiences.
