Idaho Falls is home to the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL), and it serves as the major retail and medical center for the Upper Snake River Valley and neighboring Wyoming communities. Agriculture continues to be a major player in the regional economy and a new malting plant is on the horizon. Science and technology jobs have attracted well-educated workers to the area over the years, many of whom have formed viable consulting firms in order to remain near their favorite recreation areas. Some 65 members of the Chamber of Commerce learned about the Partnership in October followed by a successful member-recruitment reception at the Willard Arts Center. At the first member meeting in January, the group agreed to meet quarterly to concentrate on diversifying the local economy, renewing the downtown district, strengthening planning and zoning in Swan Valley, and raising awareness of the Generation IV reactor design project.
