Nestled in the foothills of the Caribou National Forest, Pocatello and its surrounding smaller communities dominate the southeast Idaho highlands. Pocatello was founded as a major railroad hub for the Union Pacific Railroad and in 1901 became home to Idaho State University. Major services and industries in the area include the Portneuf Regional Medical Center, AMI Semiconductor, Kimberly-Clark and various food and fertilizer processors. Considered by its Chamber of Commerce to be the national park gateway for Utahans and points southwest, Pocatello promotes its tourism and recreational attractions as vigorously as other Idaho communities. Conservation challenges in southeast Idaho include watershed restoration for the Portneuf River, selenium contamination in the phosphate mining areas, and air quality concerns from autos and industrial activities.
