Guy Heywood

gheywood@amanresorts.com

Amangani (which means “peaceful home” and opened in 1998) is Amanresorts' first North American resort. Nearly 2,135 metres (7,000ft)above sea level, the resort overlooks meadows and grazing land. Across the valley is Teton Pass, which divides the Snake River Range from the snow-capped Tetons. The Teton Range, dominated by the 4,200m summit of Grand Teton, is the youngest of the Rocky Mountains. The snow-fed waters of the Snake River gather in the Yellowstone Plateau and wind south through Jackson Hole. The word “Hole” (as in Jackson Hole) was once used to describe high mountain valleys.

The 40-suite, three-storey resort is set on the cliff-edge of a butte. Its roof, crafted of cedar shakes, flows like a natural outcropping. Amangani makes extensive use of Oklahoma sandstone and Pacific redwood. Douglas fir and cedar also lend shape and style to the resort. A soaring ceiling and a wide, two-storey window with stunning mountain views opens up from the lobby.

The Co-op has come a long way from its humble beginnings on South Wallace Avenue in Bozeman. What was started by a few people on the fringe looking for a way to buy cheap rice has grown to a $10 million business employing over 100 workers with an annual growth rate of 20%.

In 1992, the Co-op bought a building in downtown Bozeman to better serve the needs of our growing membership. A deli was added and a departmental structure was created. In January of 2002, the Co-op reorganized as a cooperative corporation. Later in 2002, a major expansion project was completed, doubling the retail space and adding a coffee, juice and dessert bar with an eating area upstairs.

The Co-op is now a huge success, nationally recognized and awarded, with double the sales per population base than most other natural food cooperatives in the country.

In 1992, Moonlight Basin Ranch was formed by three partners after they purchased 25,000 acres of land from Plum Creek Lumber. Tattered from decades of commercial logging and ravaged by a pine beetle infestation, the property was in rough shape. Nonetheless, the partners loved the land and they immediately set about to resurrect it and its habitat.

To achieve this, a vigorous revitalization effort commenced. Access was restricted to minimal traffic. Most hunting ceased. A wildlife biologist was brought in, and together they unveiled a revolutionary plan: develop a small percentage of the land and leave the rest untouched.

Moonlight Basin is more than a world-class destination resort. It’s a unique company involved with responsible stewardship. And it’s a company in balance with its environment.

When NOLS students step into the world's wild places, they bring not only their backpacks, but also more than 40 years of experience in expeditioning and wilderness stewardship.

NOLS founder Paul Petzoldt's idea was simple: take people into the wilderness for an extended period of time, teach them the right things, feed them well and when they walk out of the mountains, they will be skilled leaders with a strong environmental ethic. Students are immersed in a core curriculum that includes technical wilderness skills, leadership development and environmental studies. The core of Petzoldt's idea was the extended expedition, one of sufficient length that a person could learn and practice the skills over and over again. That is the backbone of every NOLS course and today the school is widely recognized as the world's leader in the extended expedition, from two weeks to twelve.
