A
graduate of the University of Montana Law School in 1977, Betsy Scanlin
filed and adjudicated water rights claims in Montana during 20 of her
32 years of law practice. She worked for the New York City
Department of Environmental Protection on water conservation measures
from 1984 to 1986, and was an attorney for the New York City Department
of City Planning from 1986 to 1993, dealing with subdivision, zoning,
large-scale developments and siting of city facilities such as
wastewater treatment plants. Upon return to her hometown of
Red Lodge in 1993, she was a city council representative for five years
before being elected mayor in 2007. Early in 2008 she eagerly
signed the Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement and has had
the advice and support of an active local CPA committee in increasing
recycling, purchasing new city equipment with conservation in mind, and
planning for major projects involving solar energy and conservation
such as use of LED streetlights.
